G'day and welcome to my bit of the internet. Read on for me blethering about music, and sometimes mental health. Rock on!

Song of the Week #238
More music, less blethering this week – that’s a promise.
Also, there will be no mention of the disaster which makes up the current Australian political landscape in this issue. It beggars belief.
For those of you who don’t check my blog or follow me via Facebook or Twitter, here is a link to something I wrote last week in response to an article in a Sunday newspaper magazine: http://www.robwoozle.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/beware-of-newspaper-magazine-experts.html It’s to do with diets and I was pretty worked up when I wrote it.
I took the bus to work today. I found it rather ironic on national “ride to school day” that I didn’t! I’ve made up for it on plenty of other days though. So much so that I’m considering getting a commuting bike – using my flash racing bike seems overkill and of course one can never have too many two wheeled modes of transport. Check out Mojo Bikes online for great deals on bikes you design yourself. The kids are currently riding one of these and loving every minute.
David Bowie’s new album is available. I’ve listened to it a number of times and I am really enjoying it. It’s not really ground breaking but then you wouldn’t expect it to be. What it does have is well crafted songs, excellent musicians and enough of the signature Bowie sound to satisfy the fans. I’ve got a downloaded version at the moment but will be getting my hands on a hard copy very shortly.

A big news item that might not have appeared on your radar is that Scotland will hold a referendum in September, 2014 to determine whether or not they will become independent. I’m really not sure how I feel about that. And why do they have to wait so long to vote? And who gets to vote? I hope that it is only people who actually live there. Scots are scattered to all corners of the globe…
Battlefield Band - The Roving Dies Hard - http://youtu.be/9qZZ01RFf_Q
What will the Duke of Edinburgh be called if Scotland goes its own way?
Last night while finishing off some marking this song came on in the background. We’ve undoubtedly had it here before but it always makes me laugh…
Bowling for Soup – 1985 - http://youtu.be/K38xNqZvBJI
For all you fans of good guitar, big hair, The Living End, rock and roll and tattoos just check this out…this is the original, not a copy…
Stray Cats – Rock This Town - http://youtu.be/TqOAvo6SJI4
Earlier in the week I watched Neil Finn and Paul Kelly in concert (via YouTube). It was not a concert that I thought I’d enjoy, the potential for it to be slow and tedious was quite large. However, I was pleasantly surprised and let the whole show play while I worked. I had a good chuckle when Paul related that he’d needed to learn about 50 new chords to play all of Neil’s tunes! This clip isn’t from the show but is a tune of Paul’s that I really like.
Paul Kelly and Neil Finn – Leaps and Bounds - http://youtu.be/bdOBFCyv354
Alright, that’s enough for one week. I’ve got a big weekend of mountain-biking ahead in the MONT 24hr race here in Canberra. It’s my 8th 24hr race but my first go in a team of only 4 riders. Hopefully all my training will pay dividends. If you’re around Canberra then head out to Kowen Forest for a look – it’s a huge event.
I’m going to finish with Ozzy this week… I hadn’t heard this song in ages or seen the clip and to be frank it’s pretty cool.
Ozzy Osbourne – Miracle Man - http://youtu.be/9qWj7Z7t9Us
That’s it. Play the music and let me know if you like anything you hear.

Beware of newspaper magazine experts...
But, I made the mistake of scanning one of the Sunday papers and an article caught my eye about healthy eating. This is a topic that I am very interested in given the changes I've made to my diet since October last year.
Quite frankly I'm sick of "experts" telling us that almost everything we eat and drink is no good. In this article diet soft drinks, smoothies, muffins, muesli bars and a whole lot of other stuff were squarely taken aim at. To be fair, alternatives were offered but they were generally so boring that it's no wonder that people fail to stick to a healthy eating plan.
I'm the first to admit that I'm pretty bloody minded when it comes to food as a result of my blood test results and the strong wish to live a long life. But you know there are limits folks. And for most people moderation is the key. You can drink "Vitamin Water" once in a while but don't drink it every day and expect it to help you lose weight - it won't. You can eat a muesli bar as a healthy(ish) snack but just pay attention to the information on the packet - some are much better than others. And you can drink a sugar free soft drink as a treat once in a while - you won't notice the taste difference for long I can assure you - just don't drink three cans a day.
As for smoothies and muffins well it really depends what is in them. Full cream milk with chocolate topping as well as banana, yoghurt and honey probably isn't something you'd want all the time but skim or soy milk with low-fat yoghurt and perhaps no chocolate is a fair compromise once in a while.
Denying yourself any kind of food that you enjoy to eat is extremely mentally debilitating. I can tell you this because I've been there and I still find myself there from time to time. I used to get the shakes and pretty much panic when at the supermarket trying to find something to cook. I've also left more than once with an empty shopping bag and got back to the car and found myself crying.
Unless you're at risk of imminent death then just be sensible and honest with yourself. Honesty and willpower are the keys to a healthy diet. Make a plan, make it manageable, get expert advice and most of all do your best not to let it make you miserable or angry (sometimes easier said than done). Make sure people that need to know what you are doing are aware as you'll find most folks ultra-supportive if you're not a zealot. If you fall off the wagon then admit that and get back on.
Billy Connolly advocates "eat less, move more" as his mantra for weight loss. I didn't need to lose weight but I think it works for me if I modify it to "eat well, move more" - my mantra for a healthy life.
All I have to do now is to take my own advice. And you know what, that's not something I can do by myself. There are a few people I know I can talk to, professional help and of course writing about it.
Eat well, but remember that there is more to life than brown rice and raw vegetables.

(authors note: I am NOT a dietitian or anything like that. These are just the opinions of a 40-something year old very active male with a good diet who got the shock of his life when his cholesterol was sky high. I'm continuing to work with my Doctor and Dietitian to remain healthy after pretty much halving the cholesterol level in 4 months.)

Song of the Week #235
Rick Springfield – I Hate Myself - http://youtu.be/kb4xgpBICtA
But Macca’s reflection on his writings made me pause to think why I bother with this at all. I started out just sharing a song with some colleagues and it ballooned into a blog about anything and everything. But you know, that’s OK with me. I’m not overly fussed if people read what I write or not. For me just having to write something down is enjoyable and at times, cathartic. I do write differently at times because I know who might be reading, but not too often. The thought processes that go into thinking about the songs often take me a whole week and I find myself singing in my head as I cycle all the time.
This is the song that got me back into Al’s stuff (via the podcast of this session)…

Song of the Week #235
Lately I've been getting up at 5am, on the bike by 5.30am and riding quite a few kilometres before work. It's been working pretty well and I really enjoy the early morning climb out of Canberra up the highway. If I manage 40 or 50km before I ride into work then I can get up to 70km in a day without too many issues. And I'm really hoping that all those kilometres in the bank will help me out on 23/24 March in the 24 hr mountain bike race here in Canberra. I'm in a team of 4 for the first time so there is an expectation that I'll ride quite a bit. Can't wait!!
Not long ago a friend asked me if I'd like to do a long ride and foolishly I agreed. So assuming it isn't raining cats and dogs on Saturday morning we're off for 180km in the saddle. Road cycling is often said to be about managing how much you can suffer and this will prove it. I haven't done this ride in full since I was working up to Ironman in 2010.
In preparation I've had Thursday and Friday this week off the bike and that's meant I've slept in until around 6.30am. It's amazing how refreshing it is to get 90 minutes extra shut-eye. The dog is a bit confused though. Maybe he misses his 5am tummy rub before he bolts upstairs and hops into my side of the bed.
If I make it on Saturday - and I don't have much choice really - that'll mean just over 350km for the week - my biggest ever. After that I'll be reducing the distance but not the time - you can't go as far on dirt tracks on a mountain bike!
My copy of the Alabama Shakes album on vinyl arrived - with a bonus 7" disc of b-sides and a voucher to download MP3s for the iPod. Now THAT is the way to sell an album. The vinyl sounds wonderful - a big organic sound that jumps off the platter - and I don't have to fiddle around copying it to digital to play in the car.
Alabama Shakes – I Ain’t The Same - http://youtu.be/svZNjhsk2ys
Speaking of vinyl, I was in Landspeed Records with Zoe last weekend and spotted some of the new release Iron Maiden picture discs. The sound is remastered as well and so I was seriously tempted. But I'm struggling to find a review on the re-mastering. Most people seem to be buying them to collect or to stick on the wall. Iron Maiden also have the third instalment in their DVD series of the band's history coming out soon called "Maiden England". I better save more pennies.

The host of one of my favourite TV shows always asks her guests what the first music they bought with their own money was. I did a quick bit of investigation today to find out what some colleagues and friends had spent their dollars (or pounds) on back in the day. Of course there are a few that cringe at the thought but most had good taste. Here’s a bit of a selection.
DJ DJ bought Suzi Quatro’s “Your Mama Won’t Like Me” on cassette. http://youtu.be/3LEiZrlk7Ow Not a bad choice really for a first go. I wonder if his mama indeed did like it?
The Chief relates that he bought the Rolling Stones LP, “Get Yer Ya-Yas Out” and then played it every evening of his last year at school. No wonder he knows all the good Stones songs backwards! Here’s Midnight Rambler from that set: http://youtu.be/kxTHIgHucpg
DJ OrphanA has heaps of street cred as her first purchase was “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” by The Beatles. http://youtu.be/8XnMMiDUqi4 Personally every time I hear “picture yourself on a boat on a river…” I think of Wind in the Willows!
DJ AK owned up to buying this classic piece of music http://youtu.be/hTA6I6hn-z4 but then discovered a 45rpm of Hendrix that belonged to his Dad. He’s never been the same – another worshipper at the altar of Jimi.
Perhaps the most obscure response was DJ McG who spent his pennies on The Jags doing “Back Of My Hand” on a 45. Bit of an Elvis Costello vibe going here. http://youtu.be/9yNS2_-71dQ
DJ FatHenry coughed up his cash for Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America”. I’ve come full circle recently and have been listening to a bit of their stuff. http://youtu.be/3Aag9ivdCtE
DJ Heeler certainly wins the prize for the biggest giggle after revealing this as his first purchase - http://youtu.be/cPRA_-z8Cm8 - and the sad thing is that I know all the lyrics thanks to the sing-along song book at primary school.
Two trendoids (H and DJ KOT) admitted to shelling out for Skyhooks singles. Probably unknown to my overseas listeners, the Skyhooks were an essential part of Australian rock music. Check out Horror Movie: http://youtu.be/o7l8rlnMpCI , Living In The 70s: http://youtu.be/nYMc3v6HTXs or my personal favourite for an hilarious song title: You Just Like Me Cos I’m Good In Bed: http://youtu.be/mrl7kODQ8kg
DJ Al-Ee like a few others purchased a compilation album. After that she chose well though with Midnight Oil. That’s a bonus as she’ll be able to sing-along with H and the band at the tribute show. http://youtu.be/9QzH4KOf9Bs
Uncle Sam also made me smile when he revealed his love for this next artist - http://youtu.be/Jj4nJ1YEAp4. I agree though as it’s a top song and Kenny has a great voice and team of songwriters.
Of course, I wasn’t all that specific when I asked these folks and DJ McRoundTable related that the first music she bought was sheet music for this classic: http://youtu.be/RntxCmqQqSA
Boy, if you don’t find something worth listening to in that lot I’m not sure I can go on!
It took me a while to remember the first album I bought with my own money. And I’ve narrowed it down to a couple. It was either the soundtrack to the movie “The Jewel of the Nile” or AC/DC’s live album “If You Want Blood You’ve Got It”.
I probably bought the soundtrack because I liked the movie and it had this song on it by Billy Ocean - http://youtu.be/-n3sUWR4FV4
But I distinctly remember getting the AC/DC live disc because the woman working in the Sports and Record Shop remarked to my Mum that she would be sure to enjoy my purchase! It’s a great album that stands the test of time and is better than any subsequent live recordings they’ve put out. Pure energy recorded onto vinyl.
AC/DC – Riff Raff (live 1978) - http://youtu.be/f9Fwcdsriic
Lastly, it’s DJ MySis’ birthday today. Here’s one for her; The Runaways – Mama Weer All Crazee Now - http://youtu.be/4RTipAZuMRI
That’ll do for a week. With a new Billy Bragg AND a new Steve Earle album not far off life is good.
